The Food Microbiology Laboratory was set up with the view to ensuring the quality and safety of food and food products at every level of the food chain, that is, from the “Farm to fork”. The Food Microbiology facility is a purpose-built laboratory with adequate infrastructure and sterile environmental conditions for accurate microbiological examinations.
The laboratory carries out microbiological analysis on a wide range of food and food products such as fish and fish products, tap water, bottled drinking water, milk and dairy products, meat and animal feeds
The testing activities cover detection of pathogen such as, Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Clostridium species, Staphylococcus aureus, as well as Total viable counts (TVC) of micro-organisms, yeasts and moulds counts. The laboratory also performs Evaluation of air microflora and Cleaning and disinfection efficacy test to assess hygiene status of food processing units (See list of services provided).
The laboratory is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for the following test methods. The laboratory is presently working to add up in new tests and test methods in its scope of accreditation.
||Total viable count at 300 C in Food and food products.|
|| Enumeration of coagulase positive staphylococci in food and food products.|
||Ennumeration of coliforms in food and food products. |
||Detection of salmonella species in food and food products.|
||Ennumeration of beta (B)-glucuronodase positive Escherichia coli in food and food products. |
||Enumeration of Clostridium perfrigens in food and food products. |
||Detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria in water. |
||Determination and enumeration of yeast and moulds in food and food products.|
Proficiency tests were carried out on a regular basis with FAPAS, Central Science Laboratory (UK), National Laboratory Association (South Africa), SADCMET Water Proficiency Testing Laboratories Association and, National Laboratory Association, South Africa.
